QM Open Meeting 14/15th April

SUN AND WIND....BUT NOT BOTH TOGETHER

The Queen Mary Open Meeting was the first of the season and yes there was plenty of water. With the support of RYA Sailability and following sterling work by Steve and his granddaughter we had the three RYA boats available.

11 boats came to the starting line on Saturday in beautiful sunshine but little wind and so the fleet enjoyed the sunshine whilst the Race Team tried to find enough stable wind to set a course. Eventually race 1 got under way and provided reasonable sailing although not without its holes and shifts. As ever the cream came to the top and Megan delivered her first bullet of the season. A second race was started but abandoned before the end of the first lap due to lack of wind. So we all went back to the Clubhouse for tea, Paul then lost the plot when he received a text saying his booking for 9 was cancelled as they had not been able to contact him – comes of not taking his mobile on the water. After a visit to the Ivory Tusk the booking was restored and 9 of us enjoyed an excellent curry in the evening.

The next day we had wind but no sun which allowed the new Race Team to get in 4 excellent races, this time with all three RYA boats participating. The racing was very close and, although Megan delivered 4 bullets, the rest of us had 4 very competitive races, the slightest error being punished by the loss of one or more places. The tightness of the racing was demonstrated by the overall results which had 2nd and 3rd separated by only 1 point and 4th and 5th tied but separated by the discard.

1st Megan Pascoe

2nd Bruce Hill

3rd Carol Dugdale

So a good turnout and close racing made a great start to the season and we look forward to more of the same but with wind and sunshine combined.
